WSoS To Race or Not, Criteria and Texting

WSOS Skippers,

At our CYC Board Meeting last night the question of why and when do we make the call about canceling races for WSoS. The agreed upon criteria is a safety question. For example, if the air temperature is such that, even if it is a clear day, spray on to the deck would start to freeze so foredeck sailors would be in jeopardy of slipping, then no racing. Likewise, if it is snowing, no racing. If the wind chill because of big breezes combined with low temperatures is a risk of hypothermia even on deck, then no racing. The point is that whether on the deck or in the water edge case temperatures and conditions must be reckoned with by cancelling races. I note the Soup owners said the water temperature under their boat at PYC the other day was around 38 degrees. 'Nuff said.

The next question is how far in advance do we cancel and how do we communicate it? Because email is the new snail mail now that just about everyone text messages and because some sailors do not look at their email every hour or so, we have been cancelling the day before. However, the current consensus is that we should wait till the morning of the race to make the call because conditions are so variable (see two weeks ago). So, we are going to make the call no later than 9:00 on Sunday mornings as to cancellations. We will send out an email and also a text message to those of you who have checked the box when you signed up agreeing to receive text messages. If you did not check that box, send me a note and I can open your file and do it for you. ddamore33@gmail.com

Finally, please remember, that under RRS, the decision whether to race or not is within the sole and exclusive discretion of the skipper. You know yourself, your crew, and your boat. Irrespective of whether CYC-WSoS runs a race or not, it is your decision whether to be out there or not. Always err on the side of being safe. Note: I'm also texting this email so that you'll know whether you checked that little box.

See you on the river,
Denny

Sailing on Sundays - Last Race March 12

Sailing on Sundays Racers

The Invitation to Race for the Sailing on Sundays event lists the last race of this series as March 5. This is incorrect. The last race of this series is March 12. The official Notice of Race is on the Notice Board, which is linked from Sailpdx.org and it shows the correct dates. Publishing these invitations are done many months in advance of the series and can contain errors. The best rule is to go to the Notice Board for the official information. My apologies for the confusion.

Sailing on Sundays Notes for February 12

Sailing on Sundays Racers,

Two quick notes:

  • Racing starts an hour earlier because of the Super Bowl. Also, there is a Super Bowl party after the race at PYC (big screen, food, etc.)

  • Safety at Sea is now full. You can get on a wait list.

Sailing on Sundays - Super Bowl Earlier Start - PYC Buffet

Sailing on Sundays Racers,

A couple of reminders:

  • This coming week is the Super Bowl. We are starting the races at 1200 hours to allow for football fans.

  • As always, PYC is open to everyone after the race with the bar and grill open. In addition they are having an optional buffet feed and game watching party. I've attached the flyer. Seems like a good deal to me. I'm told you can hang out at the club without doing the buffet – the best of both worlds.

Also, thanks to all you SYSCO members race on SoS who attended Fleet-O-Rama. It was a good opening for the upcoming season, and PYC was a great host. For other upcoming events go to www.sailpdx.org.

Short and sweet. That's all for now.

See you on the river,

CYC Sailing on Sundays and McCuddy's Food Drive

From Mark McCuddy

Thank you SOS Sailors for making Sunday's 3rd Annual Food Drive our most successful to date! You came through w/ lots of food donations and over $2,230. in donations to date! This is over double what we raised last year and is very much appreciated by the Oregon Food Bank!

Passing out beer after the race was a ton of fun for us on the Ranger Tug! Thank you for making it possible and thank you for forgiving us for some of our less than artful tosses!

As in years past we were so fortunate to have great conditions! The weather gods waited until we were back in our slips and had things put away before they decided we all needed a good rinsing!

We got a ton of good photos- they'll be posted to the McCuddy's Marina Facebook page if you'd like to check them out. You can also text me if you would like me to send them to you- just give me your boat name and description.

Thanks again, have a great holidays and see you next year!

Mark McCuddy

Bye, and Bye, Bye

I'm sitting here on Sunday eating a piece of pre-Christmas bourbon pumpkin pie at just around the usual race start time and, sadly, although the pie is great, I'd rather be out on the river. If you're out there now, you missed the note that this is a bye week – so is next week FYI. After that, it's full speed ahead to March 15. But for now, this is Bye, Bye to sailing here in town for 2019. All done…

Off week, On task

Sailing on Sundays Racers
It was kind of nice to have an off week given the somewhat snotty weather we had last Sunday. But taking a break means being on task to do the last of the Thanksgiving cleanup and, of course, yard work. It also gives us a moment to consider how much we miss being out on the water when we don't go sailing on a Sunday, or any other day of the week for that matter.

The sky is blue, no wind for you.

Oh, my, are we all grateful that last Sunday's "race" actually finished in the allocated maximum 3 hour time limit. What would we have done without the current? Fred was worried that the tide was going to change, and we were going to go up river backwards.

Can You Say "Thanks?"

I guess with Thanksgiving right around the corner, a fun, easy day of steady breeze, and being surrounded by friends, I just got a little nostalgic and had a welling up of the old attitude of gratitude for the crew community of which I am part and the Portland sailing community at large.
